Elections in Greenland on 6 April

Yesterday, Greenland’s parliament Inatsisartut decided that there will be a new, extraordinary parliamentary election on 6 April, according to Sermitsiaq.

The extraordinary election comes as a consequence of the Demokraatit party withdrawing from the governing coalition, which subsequently lost its majority. The four parties Demokraatit, IA, Atassut and Naleraq had proposed to hold new elections.

The election will be on the same date as regular local elections in Greenland are to be held, in which representatives to the five municipal councils are to be elected.

Polls indicate that the IA party will perform well, and that several of the smaller parties will end up with support below the threshold level for representation in the Inatsisartut.
