Denmark Developing New Arctic Strategy

Denmark’s current Arctic strategy dates back to 2011 and expires this year. Hence, a new Danish Arctic strategy is to be worked out this year. That is not a minute too soon, says Greenland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Ane Lone Bagger (S).

- The current strategy is obsolete as it does not reflect the fact that we constitute the Arctic part of the unity of the Realm, she says to Sermitsiaq.

An extensive meeting for MP’s from all the three parts of the Realm – Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands – will take place in Ilulisssat, Greenland towards the end of March this year. The Ilulissat meeting will effectively be the starting point for the political debate about the new Arctic strategy.

- It is important for Naalakkersuisut that the political debate about the Arctic strategy kicks off in the Arctic, i.e. in Greenland, says Bagger.
