Demolition of Old Kiruna Starts

The demolition of the old Kiruna center in Northern Sweden is a process that will ongoing for ten years.

All that remains is to empty out the interior of the buildings before the excavators occupy the now-vacated city.

The Swedish mining company LKAB first proposed moving the city center about 3 kilometers in 2004. This was to enable continued mining. In the company's search for more iron ore to keep operations going, it was revealed that it had to be mined in deeper grounds - in ore veins which slope 1.3 kilometers inwards towards the city's residential area.

New Kiruna was officially opened in August this year.
