Decision on Potential Humpback Whale Hunting Moratorium for Nuuk Fjord Today

The local council in Sermersooq municipality in Greenland will decide this afternoon whether or not a ban on hunting the humpback whale in the Nuuk Fjord shall be introduced, according to Sermitsiaq.

A hearing about the proposed ban was recently finished, with only one out of 27 responses coming back against such a ban.

On Monday, a majority in the local council’s committee on economy and business decided to approve of the ban, while the Siumut party wants to postpone the issue.

It has previously emerged that the humpback whale is nearly eradicated from the Nuuk fjord, and WWF Greenland is in favor of the proposed ban.
