Critical Lack of Competence in Sami Languages
In 2021, the Norwegian Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development requested a mapping of competence in Sami language and culture in the Sami language governance area. This report is now ready.
The report demonstrates that there is a significant shortage of Sami language competence in the governance areas, with the exception of areas in which Sami language has a strong position and is used as everyday language by inhabitants. The language situation is particular precarious in Lule Sami and Southern Sami areas, according to NORCE. It has in particular proved difficult to retain competence in schools and in the health services.
“The government wants to do something about this. The report we have now received from NORCE provides a solid foundation for further work to strengthen Sami language”, says State Secretary Nancy Porsanger Anti.
