Climate Change Brings Cloudberry to Svalbard

After a record-hot Svalbard summer, cloudberries have been found for the first time on the archipelago.

That is reported by Forskning.no.

This year's summer on Svalbard was both dry and warm, with July being the hottest ever recorded on the archipelago. For the first time, temperatures over the polar climate were registered in several places with ten degrees Celsius or more.

The cloudberry plant has been documented on Svalbard since the early 1900s, but there has never been any proof of it bearing fruit. Cloudberries need over ten degrees Celsius and little rain to bear fruits. The conditions were, therefore, in place for the cloudberry to ripen this year.
