China Threatened the Faroe Islands with Huawei

The Chinese Ambassador to Denmark, Feng Tie, has threatened members of the Faroese leadership in order to secure a strategically important contract for the Chinese telecom giant Huawei. Danish daily Berlingske reveals the case.

If Huawei was not granted the contract, the Chinese government would drop a free-trade agreement with the Faroe Islands, according to a hitherto unknown recording.

The revelation from Berlingske is the first of its kind to prove how the Chinese government has connected access to the Chinese market with Huawei’s attempts at securing 5G network contracts in Europe.

Huawei officially emphasises that it is a private company that is not affiliated with the Chinese state.
