Cause of Nuuk Power Break is Located

Since Monday, there has been an extensive power break in Greenland’s capital Nuuk. Now, the cause for the incident has been located, according to Sermitsiaq.

A cordelle has started tearing up, which causes cables to loosen and clash and thus cause frequent power breaks.

The Nukissiorfiit energy company has found the location in which this has happened and will replace the cables. It might, however, take days or even weeks before the situation is normalized again, says Energy Director of Nukissiorfiit Kaspar Mondrup.

He says the town is currently served by an emergency power plant in Nordhavnen [North port], which operates on diesel. 90 to 95 percent of the town is currently served, however, breaks may still occur.
