Canada Showcases Ability to Defend Arctic Amid Global Tensions
As part of Operation Nanook-Nunalivut, Chief Warrant Officer Terence Wolaniuk bluntly described the situation facing the Canadian Arctic.
In a speech to a group of military personnel gathered in the Resolute Bay, Nunavut training facility, Wolaniuk said:
"The threats are there, and they're real … When you look at the world, it's just a matter of time before something flares up globally. Not just in Europe, not Indo-Pacific, but also the North."
Operation Nanook-Nunalivut runs from March 1st to March 17th and includes training exercises such as joint long-range patrols, austere logistics, and below-ice diving. Most personnel come from the Canadian Armed Forces, but 50 members also come from the United States, Belgium, Germany, and France.
Wolaniuk emphasized the setting of the Canadian North, particularly the Northwest Passage, which attracts foreign interests.
