Builds Radar Satellite System For Real-Time Maritime Surveillance

Space Norway AS has started building a radar satellite system optimized for maritime surveillance in Norwegian areas of interest. Sensors and instruments aboard the satellites are developed by Norwegian suppliers, while the satellite itself is built by British Surrey Satellite Technology. The first satellite is planned to launched in early 2025. That is reported by Space Norway in a press release.

In the following year, more satellites will be launched to establish a constellation of radar satellites. The satellite system MicroSAR is tailored for marine surveillance and can detect small vessels in a large area simultaneously. Advanced technology ensures images of higher resolution and larger areas of coverage. As of today there are no radar satellite systems with the same mix of capabilities.

The radar surveillance works in the dark and during cloudy weather. The system will primarily cover Norwegian societal and governmental needs, but will also deliver maritime surveillance in a global, commercial marked on par with similar surveillance systems today.
