Believes Greenlandic Families' Legal Certainty to Be Threathened

"The legal certainty for Greenlandic families in Denmark is almost non-existent. Several Greenlandic children have been removed on a wrongful basis," says lawyer Jeanette Gjørret from Stage Advokater to Sermitsiaq.

She believes that legal certainty is under massive pressure in placement cases and it is even worse for Greenlandic families in Denmark. Gjørret har specialized in coercion and family law cases in Denmark.

"We see massive problems both legally, psychologically, and socially within the deployment area in Denmark. And for the Greenlandic families, it is completely wrong. In addition to the general issues, the Greenlandic families also face a lack of interpretation and cultural understanding as well as distortion of case files.

The lawyer tells the newspaper that the forced removal of Greenlandic children in Denmark happens on a wrongful or lacking basis.

"The system operates on the assumption that no errors occur. But the fact is that it is up to the individual case manager whether a child should be placed or not. Social work assessments are based on estimates, and we can ascertain that mistakes are made in the process which means that we ultimately get the wrong decision," concludes Jeanette Gørret.
