Barents Sea Waters Warmer than Before

The water flowing in to the Barents Sea is becoming less cooled down than before. This carries vast significance for the climate in the area and may lead to fish and other forms of live shifting to new areas, according to the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research.

Until now, scientists have believed that warmer waters and less ice coverage in the Barents Sea would lead to increased loss of temperature to the atmosphere, so that the Barents Sea would become a more efficient cooler. However, instead it turns out that the general cooling of water from the Atlantic Ocean flowing through the Barents Sea is reduced.

The scientists have investigated data from the period 1971-2018.

As a result, the fish stocks like cod and haddock may shift further east.
