Alaskan Island is Sinking
Shishmaref, a small village in Alaska, has been named as one of five places to visit before they sink into the ocean, by The India Times.
Shishmaref is witnessing the erosion of its land due to melting permafrost and rising sea levels. The community has voted to relocate, but the process is complex and costly. The village of Shishmaref in N. Alaska, has been inhabited for 400 years.
The reduced sea ice allows higher storm surges to reach shore and thawing permafrost makes the shoreline more vulnerable to erosion. The town's homes, water system and infrastructure are being undermined.
The India Times says that visiting Shishmaref will provide visitors the insight into the impacts of climate change on indigenous communities in the Arctic.
