10 000 Fewer Icelanders Than Expected
Almost 10 000 fewer people lived in Iceland at the beginning of last year than official data showed. This is mainly because people leave the country without registering their move. The total population as of January 1st last year was 359 112 inhabitants, according to the census for Statistics Iceland. Nevertheless, 368 791 inhabitants were registered in the national register.

The census of 2021 is the 24th in a row. The previous census was conducted in 2011 with a population of 315 556.
According to the last census, there were almost seven thousand more men than women in the country. The proportion of women thus goes from 49.9% to 49%, while men make up 51% of the population. looking at age groups, the proportion of residents over the age of 67 has risen to 13.1% compared to 11% in 2011.
The youngest age group, from 0-17 years, made up 22.8% of the population in last year's consensus but was just over a quarter in 2011.
