Canada to Monitor the Northwest Passage

Until the end of August, members of the Canadian Armed Forces plan to keep a close eye on marine traffic in the Northwest Passage, according to Nunatsiaq News.

According to Major Gabriel Martin-Benoit, the exercise along the Northwest Passage is to be conducted because the Northwest passage has opened up for more navigation, and it is all a part of the Canadian Forces’ mandate to maintain sovereignty. Martin-Benoit is the task force commander for Operation Nanook 19.

The exercise lasts from 11 August to 30 August.

While Canada claims that the NWP belongs to its internal waters, the USA claims that the passage is an international strait through which vessels from all over the world have the right to sail.
