World's first LNG icebreaker Polaris will be presented on Monday 31st of October 2016 in Helsinki, and will be ready for service the 1st of November.

IB Polaris joined Arctia’s fleet on 28 September 2016. The unique vessel is able to use both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and low sulphur diesel oil as fuel. The use of LNG significantly reduces carbon emissions, making IB Polaris the most environmentally friendly diesel electric icebreaker in the world, the shipowner, Arctia, says in a press-release.

The icebreaking capacity of IB Polaris is 1,8 meters at a speed of 3,5 knots. Polaris has received TEN-T funding from the EU. The most powerful Finnish icebreaker, Polaris, will enter operational icebreaking readiness on 1 November 2016, and begin its work in the Baltic Sea this winter.

Icebreaker Polaris is presented as "a true masterpiece of Finnish shipbuilding expertise". Innovative design is used for example in the vessel’s hull form and propulsion unit arrangement.

The vessel is equipped with three Azipod propulsion units rotating 360 degrees which enables excellent maneuvering qualities. The icebreaking capacity of IB Polaris is 1,8 meters at a speed of 3,5 knots. As the vessel’s orderer, the Finnish Transport Agency has received TEN-T funding from the EU for the construction of the vessel, the company says.
