U.S is Taking Over the Arctic Council in Two Weeks

The United States of America is taking over the Canadian chairmanship of the Arctic Council on the ministerial meeting set to April 24-25.

The Ministerial meeting of the Canadian Chairmanship will be hosted in Iqaluit, Nunavut in Northern Canada from April 24-25, 2015.

This meeting will mark the end of the Canadian Chairmanship, and the start of the US Chairmanship (2015 – 2017).

The Arctic Council is considered to be the premier forum for Arctic diplomacy. Secretary of State John Kerry represented the United States at the Arctic Council Ministerial meeting in Kiruna, Sweden, which marked the end of Sweden’s two-year Chairmanship of the Council and the beginning of the Canadian Chairmanship.

The Arctic Council’s inaugural Ministerial meeting took place in Iqaluit in 1998.
