Arctic Circle Assembly meets Icebreaker

Meetings of this year’s Arctic Circle Assembly can be held on the Finnish icebreaker MSV Nordica, which has arrived this week in Reykjavik. “We want to showcase Finnish Arctic expertise in Iceland during the world’s largest annual international gathering on the Arctic”, says Eero Hokkanen, Communications Manager at Arctia, the company owning the icebreaker.

US Senate Bill Includes Funding for New Icebreakers

Sharing Icebreakers between Industry and Research

The state-owned Finnish shipping company Arctia broke a new record this summer with the earliest crossing of the Northwest Passage by its multipurpose icebreaker MSV Nordica. But the trip was not aimed at a new record transit; the expedition was meant to showcase the opportunity of shared use of icebreakers for polar research.

New icebreakers further expand Russia’s access to Arctic

Nuclear icebreaker Sibir (Siberia) will be floated out at the Baltic Shipyard in St. Petersburg on September 22. It will become the second vessel of the LK-60Ya class following the launch of Arktika (Arctic) in June 2016. A third icebreaker Ural is expected to follow next year under the contract with FSUE Rosatomflot.

New figures reveal busy shipping season on Northern Sea Route

New information revealed at the 2017 Arctic Shipping Forum held last week in Helsinki, Finland, highlights a plethora of activity on the Northern Sea Route (NSR) during the year 2016. Nearly 300 different vessels conducted more than 1700 voyages into and out of the NSR.
