Promise Mobile Communications to all Arctic Towns

All settlements in the Russian Arctic will have a telephone connection by 2025, promises The Russian Communication Ministry.

All settlements in the Russian Arctic will have a telephone connection by 2025, promises The Russian Communication Ministry.

This was announced on Friday by the Deputy Minister of Communications and Mass Communications, Dmitry Alkhazov, reports the Russian news Agency Arctic-info.

Today, technical possibilities allow for a communication network on the territory up to 80 degrees latitude. When advancing further north, the signal is lost.

Three space satellites are required in order to make that communication possible in higher latitudes, and these activities will be undertaken between 2019-2025.

Equipping connection in small settlements with a population not exceeding 250 people is a separate item. The sole communications operator has the objective of bringing telephone communication to such settlements by 2025.
