The award was established in 2016 to honour a person or organization that has contributed to highlighting the importance of the High North. Frode Mellemvik, Director of the High North Center, invites the public to nominate candidates.

“We are looking for candidate that have a passion for the Arctic as well as the ability to translate that passion into action that benefits the circumpolar region. This award is a celebration of Arctic resilience and initiative.”

The winner will receive 50 000 NOK (6000 USD approx.) in support of their continued efforts.

Paavo Lipponen, Finland’s Prime minister from 1995 to 2003, received the first High North Hero award.

- This is my Nobel Prize, he told High North News in May, last year.

Arctic business potential

Mellemvik hopes that the award will raise awareness of the importance of value creation in the Arctic.

“We decided to create this award because we believe that these High North Heros will help ensure a prosperous and sustainable future for the Arctic. For the past ten years, we’ve studied value creation and business potential in the High North, and we’ve seen how economic activity can transform communities, foster innovation and build cross-border partnerships and trust. We are proud to call the Arctic our home, and we want to make sure there are jobs and possibilities for the generations to come. The ultimate High North Hero is someone who contributes to that cause.”

The deadline for nominating candidates is Monday February 6. An international committee will select the winner, which will be announced on April 6 during the annual High North Dialogue Conference in Bodø.
