Greenland will continue search for oil

While both Canada and the USA announce a halt to all Arctic waters oil exploration, Greenland stands firmly on its strategy - which absolutely contains oil exploration. The Greenlandic newspaper Sermitsiaq.ag quotes the Greenland Self-Rule Minister of Natural Resources, Múte Bourup Egede (IA), stating that the country's mineral strategy remains the same.

The USA and Canada stop

Earlier this week the news dropped that both the USA and Canada will stop the oil exploration drilling in their respective Arctic areas, and later the WWF has encouraged Greenland to follow suit.

The WWF does not, however, meet any understanding from Egede.

Strategy remains firm

- We have an oil and mineral strategy, and Naalakkersuisut intends to follow it, he says to the Greenlandic newspaper.

In March last year, the Inuit Ataquatigiit (IA) party suggested before the parliament (Inatsisartut) a new revision of the entire oil and mineral strategy.

Shall also make craft a new strategy

But now, with the party being member of the broad government coalition, the fixed strategy is just that – fixed, if the Minister's word is anything to go by.

Múte Bourup Egede emphasizes, however, that Naalakkersuisut (the Self-Rule Authorities) shall commence working on the strategy that is to be operative from 2019 onwards. Though he will not promise that oil will disappear from the future income plans of the Greenlandic Treasury.
