EU delays new sanctions

EU foreign ministers have debated whether to delay a new round of Ukraine-related sanctions that were due to be approved today, and now the decision is made.

– The European Union is delaying a new round of sanctions against Ukrainian separatists and their supporters in Russia by a week, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius says.

The delay will give time for talks to take place between Kiev and Moscow this week and for the EU to “draw the consequences,” he says.

This is reported by the german news agency DPA.

Diplomats say the sanctions will be implemented next Monday, barring a decision to the contrary.

Earlier today the ministers debated the issue, according to EU sources, ahead of top-level talks planned this week between Kiev and Moscow.

The measures, targeting 19 individuals in Russia and eastern Ukraine, as well as nine entities, had initially been scheduled for automatic approval at the Brussels talks, the news agency reports.
