A railway connection between Kirkenes, Norway and Rovaniemi, Finland may become a reality in the not too distant future. There is not time to lose, according to local stakeholders.

Following the Finnish Minister of Transportation Anne Berner’s letter to her Norwegian colleague Kjetil Solvik-Olsen in May, in which she said Finland wants to start working on a railway connection between the two countries, local business developers in Kirkenes organized a workshop yesterday to survey and map demands that can secure the establishing of the new railway.

The workshop consisted of a mix of guest speakers and group work, involving a variety of local stakeholders from politics, business – and Finland.

Two local business development bodies were eventually tasked with creating a presentation that is to raise support and lead to action for the formal steps required for the Arctic Railway to become reality, according to a press release from Sør-Varanger Utvikling.
